April 2010 ![]() For the first time, during March 2010, Petersfield Walking to Health welcomed more than 40 Walkers to a single walk! First we must thank all those who have been supporting the Group over the years for their loyalty and encouraging others to join. Due to our success in attracting Walkers, it has become apparent that we are no longer meeting all the varied needs of the Group, either in the requirements of people with different abilities or the need to provide the safest possible walks for a very large group. The Group's Volunteer Walk Leaders agreed upon a solution to the problem of our own success which is due to start on Wednesday 5th May 2010. From 5th May there will be two walks each Wednesday, each starting from Winton House at 10:00am. • The first walk will operate as a strict Walking to Health walk, of one hour's duration and covering a distance of approximately one and a half miles. • The second walk will be a faster walk of one hour's duration and will cover approximately three miles. This means that friends can meet together prior to the walk and again after their respective walks. There will be a separate Register for each walk and Walkers are to sign in on the appropriate register, choosing either the Walking TO Health walk or the faster Walking FOR Health walk. When the Group holds an Away-Day (travelling from Petersfield to walk elsewhere) there will still be a walk available from Winton House for those people who do not wish to travel to the Away-Day walk. We will meet at Winton House as normal where a nominated Leader will be available to take you on a Walking To Health walk. Watch this space for further news on our progress towards independence and beyond. |

2009 The national organisation which has hitherto co-ordinated Walking to Health Groups throughout the country has now been absorbed into the new Natural England organisation. Thus, Walking the Way to Health has now become Walking for Health. This change will mean very little visible difference to individual groups and the way they work, including Petersfield Walking to Health. However, new funding means that Walking for Health will be able to pursue a more vigorous approach to publicising the widely recognised benefits of walking to physical and mental well-being. It also ensures that the well-established system for training Volunteer Walk Leaders will continue even more strongly than before. Visible evidence of this change will be apparent in new logos, a much improved website and many more educational and promotional events to spread the word about walking and its benefits to a broader section of the general public. Benefits will also be seen in extending public footpaths and improving access on existing routes. |

October 2008 Petersfield Walking to Health was formed in June 2003 as part of the East Hampshire Walking to Health organisation under the umbrella of the East Hampshire Primary Care Trust. The group has gone from strength to strength under the guidance of the PCT's Area Co-ordinator and has now reached the point where it can become self-sustaining. Reflecting this outstanding success, the group is currently working towards independent status with affiliation directly to the national Walking the Way to Health Intitiative . Affiliation to Walking the Way to Health will have no immediate impact on the walks themselves nor on the walkers. Rather it will maintain a thread of continuity and stability by reinforcing the principles underlying the healthy walking concept at the heart of Walking the Way to Health. WHI will increasingly become the primary source of information and inspiration for the group in its new incarnation. It will also continue to offer a degree of protection to both Volunteer Leaders and members of the group by providing accident insurance cover. As a consequence of its new-found independence, we anticipate that Petersfield Walking to Health will now enjoy the freedom to expand and adapt its activities according to the wishes of its members and in their best interests. What will certainly remain unchanged are the principles underlying the safe and responsible organisation of our health walks which our members have come to expect.
